Car painting rules

The first step is to correctly calculate how much material is required for the machine. The mixture consumption is 520 milliliters (one can) to treat 1 square meter, in four layers. Most often, 4 layers are enough to reveal the full potential of Candy, but some experts recommend treating the car with 6-8 layers. Before painting, it is advisable to do a test spraying to select the appropriate shade.

In order for the painted coating to turn out high-quality and attractive, it is important to adhere to the following sequence of actions:

The foundation is being prepared. The preparation includes the leveling of all defects, including dents, scratches, chips and other damaged areas, and corrosion and rust must be removed. Grinding is carried out with abrasive materials (no more than P 800). It is extremely undesirable to putty and prime with porous compounds, since the paint and varnish material will be absorbed by them. Before applying the dye, the base is thoroughly degreased. A layer of substrate is applied

It is important to consider that the backing will slightly highlight the Candy. It is highly not recommended to use pearlescent compositions and cloudy metallics, as they will significantly reduce the Candy effect

It is important to carry out the application process in accordance with the instructions that are sold along with the substrate. This substance must dry completely for the solvent to evaporate. If the solvent does not have time to evaporate, the adhesion of the substrate to the dye will decrease. The base layer is applied. If a concentrate is used, it is pre-mixed with a transparent base substance in a ratio of 1 to 10. Sometimes craftsmen change the proportion, for example, mix the concentrate and base in a ratio of 1 to 20. After this, it is important to mix the hardener with the finished dye in a ratio of 1 to 0 ,7. The car must be painted in assembled form, each part must be in its place. The spray bottle is filled with dye, passes are made along the length of the machine, no stops are allowed. Each strip should overlap slightly with the previous one. As soon as the car has been treated with the first coat, it is important to immediately begin applying the second coating. After the paint has dried, varnishing is performed. It is necessary to varnish with at least two layers; the varnish must contain ultraviolet filters. The varnish is dried in accordance with the instructions, after which, if necessary, polished.

Types of Candy

They produce three main types of paints, with fundamentally different properties. This is a transparent Candy polish, ready-to-apply paint (base) and dry concentrate. The latter can be dissolved in varnish or base material, as well as in any other high-quality automotive paintwork.

As for release forms, Candy is sold in 520 ml aerosol cans, as well as in larger containers. Many companies sell paint by weight from 100 ml. The concentrated powder is presented in 50 g packaging, this package is enough for 550 g of finished paint (diluted 1:10 with the base material). It must be remembered that the quality of such paintwork will depend on the cost, properties of the paint used, and not just the concentrate.

Candy in balloons is most often used for tuning a car, but it is also suitable for painting:

  • household appliances,
  • mopeds, bicycles,
  • furniture,
  • souvenirs,
  • sports equipment,
  • interior items,
  • crafts.

Loose paints are used to renew the surface of cars, boats, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and furniture. They are poured into a spray gun or airbrush. Concentrates are of interest to car painters who clearly know the properties and quality of other brands of paint. Containers for liquid paint are made of transparent plastic and have a twister cap that hermetically seals the bottle. There is a special ball inside that helps shake the material.

Candy concentrates

These concentrated products are well suited for any polyurethane and acrylic car enamels. The finished paint is transparent; as layers are applied, the tone darkens and increases in intensity. Concentrates are used both in complete car painting and in airbrushing. The shelf life of the dry concentrate is much longer than that of the finished paint. The material is characterized by weak migration of pigment and increased light fastness (6-7 points out of 8 maximum).

Polyurethane Candy

This two-component paint is sold in the form of a base and a hardener (catalyst). It is rarely used in airbrushing because it is inconvenient for this purpose. In fact, this is the main product of the line. In the cylinders, polyurethane Candy is already mixed with a catalyst, but due to the airless environment it does not harden.

Candy base

This group includes varnishes, as well as base coats consisting of a transparent material with the addition of a dry concentrate. There are also pearlescent base paints that are used in car painting and airbrushing.

Features of Candy paints and colors

Candy car paints are transparent or transparent. When painting a body, they do not create a dense coating, but the effect of their application is simply amazing. Translated, “candy” means “lollipop”, because the paints have incredibly “delicious” colors and shades. Candy’s color range is represented by more than 30 tones. It could be like this:

  • blue;
  • black;
  • pomegranate;
  • lemon;
  • lime;
  • red apple;
  • green;
  • purple;
  • silver;
  • sapphire;
  • orange;
  • dark beer;
  • termite;
  • gold;
  • purple;
  • white;
  • malachite and others.

Candy car paints are easily combined with each other, resulting in unusual tones. Using modern technologies, the master can make various color transitions that give the car design a unique look.

Candy paint is a water-based paint and varnish material, so it does not contain harmful solvents that are hazardous to health. When thickening, the paint can be diluted with plain water, alcohol or vodka. Alcohol dilution will ensure faster drying of the material.

The product can be applied with an airbrush, isograph, or brush – the selection of equipment is carried out by the specialist on an individual basis. The grinding of the dye (pigment) is very fine – up to 1 micron, so the coating creates a feeling of weightlessness and transparency. Due to the peculiarities of the texture, the paint must be varnished, otherwise it will not be resistant to chemical and mechanical influences.

The material creates a beautiful film on plastic, natural leather, and can be used to paint on various flexible substrates. If you plan to paint inorganic materials – glass, metal, ceramics, a special primer is added to the composition immediately before application. Usually they use Exmix Prime, which goes perfectly with candy.

Advantages and disadvantages of Candy

The undeniable advantage of the paint is its bright, rich color. Only paramagnetic powder paint, which changes tone depending on the influence of magnets, can boast such a beautiful shine and unusual range. The color saturation is due to the introduction of a special powerful pigment into the composition. A regular car coating cannot give the same depth and transparency effect as Candy.

Other advantages of the paint and varnish material are:

  • fine grinding of the pigment powder – it does not clog the airbrush nozzle, and the coloring quality will be ideal;
  • the ability to mix colors with each other, which allows you to create more than 100 new shades;
  • suitability for drawing various gradations, transitions, so-called “moving drawings”;
  • the possibility of application in several layers (up to 8), and each layer will have a different effect and unequal richness;
  • safety, environmental cleanliness.

Candy paints also have disadvantages. Their cost is high, and the work is complex, only a professional can handle it. Therefore, owners of expensive equipment prefer to paint a car with this material, because the result will be exclusive and will cost several tens of thousands of rubles. Also, the disadvantages include the lack of possibility of repair. Even after a minor accident or scratch, the car will have to be repainted. Some dyes in the Candy group are poorly resistant to light and may fade.

It is almost impossible to do the work yourself. Since the paint is transparent, all body defects will be very noticeable. First you will have to bring the car to perfection, only then tuning it. Afterwards, a special substrate is made, and only then paint is applied in several layers, and as quickly as possible. The next layer is applied before the previous one is completely dry, and not every master can do this. To complete the work, apply 3-4 layers of varnish, also in accelerated mode.

Applying black base

Painting will be carried out with a DeVILBISS DV1 spray gun with a B+ air cap and a 1.3 nozzle. The inlet pressure on the handle should be set at 2 bar (if the pressure gauge is electronic, then it should be set to 1.5 bar).

First, a black base is applied to the prepared car part (the blackest Green Line 701 component is used). The wing was prepared with 400 grit abrasive on a soft backing. Painting is carried out in 2 layers with a short time interval between them. The second layer must be applied after the final “matting” of the first coating.

Covering with a different base

Further, exclusive car painting is only gaining momentum. After washing the spray gun, a special binder and white Sirala are poured into its container. The mixture was also “toned” with black Candy. The composition was diluted by 120%.

The material supply valve is fully tightened, after which it opens only 2 turns. This way you can achieve a more effective exclusive coloring of the part with an over-diluted composition. You need to add 2% hardener to the Candy substrate. This will avoid peeling, since there will be many layers when painting with Candy paint. After drying, the car fender is covered with another layer of material.
