Performance

The Tiguan is based on the VW Group’s MQB platform and the chassis features are easy to spot. The steering is precise and weighted, allowing you to make the most of the impressive grip.

However, the main purpose of an SUV of this type is to be comfortable, practical and easy to drive, so cars like the Tiguan aren’t the most attractive sports cars for driving pleasure anyway. The seven-speed DSG gearbox is built around closely spaced ratios that give the VW an edge when accelerating, and it’s only in seventh gear that the Tiguan feels sluggish.

It’s a decent cruiser on the motorway, and VW has now also included a new (optional) Driving Assist feature that combines steering assist and adaptive cruise control. It can operate on single-lane roads and motorway-type roads, keeping the vehicle in its lane and accelerating and braking as needed.

The biggest advantage of the adaptive dampers is the improvement in ride quality over the standard setting, with the VW quietly soaking up impacts from soft-edged road imperfections.

Skoda Kodiaq has a similar chassis, although its extra body weight and wheelbase length make sharper impacts less noticeable than in the Tiguan, while the damping in the Mazda CX-5 is softer and handles better at higher speeds over rough roads.

VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system has an off-road setting that controls traction control for maximum traction, but the lack of ground clearance and the use of summer tires prevent you from taking the risk of venturing too far off paved roads. The VW also leads the way when it comes to cabin quietness, with good suppression of both wind and engine noise.

Engines, acceleration and top speed

Diesels in this car make the most sense: they are refined and offer the best combination of economy and performance. 148 hp version The TDI is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in a solid 9.4 seconds, with a top speed of 200 km/h. Transition to the top-spec 197 hp version. The TDI improves the sprint time by 7.5 seconds and the top speed to 215 km/h.

The entry-level 1.5-litre TSI petrol Tiguan manages the same 0-100km/h sprint in a more sedate 10.9 seconds, while the more powerful car produces 148bhp. With. improves this figure to 9.2 seconds. The plug-in hybrid is expected to return a figure of around 7.5 seconds, while the eagerly awaited 316 PS Tiguan R With. It will be even faster, but by how much specifically there is no data yet.

New body

The transition to the global modular MQB platform not only increased unification and reduced development costs, but also significantly expanded the range of configurations and prices. Now the Volkswagen Tiguan 2020 has a new body (photo) that means 50 kg less weight, thanks to the use of more high-strength steel and aluminum. The weight reduction is accompanied by an increase in overall dimensions 4486 (+60) x 1839 (+30) x 1673 (-30) mm, which, with a wheelbase of 2681 (+77), will free up additional space for passengers and luggage. In addition to a large number of electronic assistants, the driver is available with optional adaptive steering with increased sensitivity, which is 2.1 turns from lock to lock instead of 2.7 in the basic version. Ground clearance (clearance) remained at the same level of 200 mm, and the aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cx) was reduced from 0.37 to 0.32.

Interior

The interior of the Volkswagen Tiguan 2020 model year after restyling will be taken as a starting point the latest Golf hatchback eighth generation. The main changes to the interior of the modernized crossover, in addition to improving the quality of finishing materials, will boil down to expanding the functionality and external interface of the proprietary multimedia system. The design and dimensions of the central touch display used will also undergo correction. Many electronic assistants, such as monitoring systems for blind spots, driver fatigue, road signs, lane markings and automatic braking, may be included in the basic configuration or moved to the equipment list of more affordable versions. In addition, during the restyling, close attention will be paid to improving the sound insulation of the cabin.

Sales in Russia

The new Volkswagen Tiguan 2020 is already on sale in major car dealerships. The Russian premiere took place later than in Europe, where the first sales took place in the fall of 2019. The delay was caused by the need to re-adjust the conveyor at the plant in Kaluga, where the cars are assembled.

In anticipation of the moment when the SUV will be released into the Russian dealer network, the Russian Internet was replete with spy photos of the appearance and interior of the new product. The excitement calmed down somewhat after VW Concern preceded the start of sales with its own large-scale presentation. Professionally made photographs of the entire model range were posted on the manufacturer’s website.
