Common Infiniti Check Engine Problems

Here are some problems related to the Infiniti check engine that occur “more than usual”:

Variable valve timing

Almost all Infiniti engines are equipped with variable valve timing. This electro-hydraulic system runs on engine oil, which means poor oil quality or low oil levels can cause the engine to not operate properly. This will affect the intake valve timing control. You may experience difficult starting, poor idling and/or stopping, loss of power and hesitation during acceleration. Another possible cause is a leaking galley gasket, which is located inside the engine behind the timing chain. Codes: P0021 or P0011.

Time control problem

Another possible timing control issue is on the release side. Control is carried out by an electromagnetic solenoid, which may fail over time. Although this can cause drivability problems such as rough running, in most cases the only symptom you will see is the check engine light. Codes: P0014 or P0024.

Mass air flow sensor

You may encounter a situation where your engine is running rough, stalling, doesn’t want to idle, and you notice black smoke. This may be caused by a dirty MAF sensor. To clean the sensor, use only MAF cleaning fluid. Code P0101

Oxygen sensor

Downstream o2 sensors can fail, giving false readings of catalytic converter efficiency. This could be caused by a faulty sensor or heat-damaged wiring as it runs near the exhaust pipes. Codes: P0138 and P0158

Vacuum leak

Infinitis are available with V6 or V8 engines. This means that intake manifolds are quite complex, with various possible leak points in the intake vacuum. Because this will result in poor operating conditions, you may experience rough idle, lack of power, or hesitancy during acceleration. Codes: P0171 or P0174

Misfire

Random cylinder misfire is something you may experience in your Infiniti. Since it usually occurs sporadically, finding the cause can be tricky. Besides the obvious bad spark plugs or ignition coil, this can also be caused by dirty fuel injectors or intake air leaks. Code: P0300

EVAP Leak

Like most other cars, Infiniti can also suffer from various EVAP related problems. Typically you will have a large EVAP leak. While this could be caused by the gas cap not sealing, it is possible that you have a leaky Evap Canister release valve. Code: P0455

Throttle body

If your engine is idling, the throttle body may be clogged with carbon. You will need to clean it with a carb cleanser. However, in most cases this will result in a high idle speed and a check engine light. To fix this, try the throttle body relearn procedure. Codes: P0507

Automatic transmission

Automatic transmissions have a well-known weak point. The transmission valve body may have an electrical problem that causes the transmission to go into “idle mode” and turn on the “check engine” light. The cause of the problem is usually a broken solenoid electrical connector and can be soldered in place of replacing the valve body assembly. Code: P1757 – Front Brake Solenoid Circuit or P0720.

How do I perform the throttle body relearn procedure?

Learning the accelerator pedal release position

  1. Make sure the accelerator pedal is fully released.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position and wait at least 2 seconds.
  3. Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position, wait at least 10 seconds.
  4. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position and wait at least 2 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position, wait at least 10 seconds.

Learning closed throttle position

  1. Make sure the accelerator pedal is fully released.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position.
  3. Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position, wait at least 10 seconds.
  4. Check that the throttle valve moves for more than 10 seconds, confirming the operating sound.
