Basic data on the Suzuki J20A engine is shown in the table: The J series of engines has design features:

An important characteristic of the engine is timing chains, which, unlike belts, last longer. Also, the probability of their breakage is small, since wear of the chains is accompanied by atypical noise and “swimming” of idle speed. However, if a break in the small chain occurs (this is possible due to oil starvation), then the pistons are 100% likely to bend the valves, which will require their replacement. If a large chain breaks, there is a 50% chance that valves and pistons will collide.

Chain Replacement Materials

One of the most difficult procedures when repairing a J20A engine will be replacing the chains. When replacing, you will need the following materials:

Chain drive gears usually do not require replacement.


Caring for the Suzuki Grand Vitara engine involves regular maintenance including changing oil, filters and spark plugs. The plant recommends changing the oil in the J20A engine after 15 thousand km. But taking into account the operating conditions of cars in Russia, it is recommended to reduce the frequency of oil changes to 10 thousand km.

According to the instructions, it is necessary to use Suzuki Motor Oil brand oil with parameters 0W-20 for the engine. As an alternative, many owners use synthetic oils that meet the 5W-30 standard. The capacity of the oil system is 4.5 liters, but when replacing the old oil is not completely removed, so 4.2-4.3 liters are poured into the crankcase.

One of the important points of engine maintenance is the replacement of drive chains camshafts. According to the regulations, such a procedure must be carried out every 200 thousand km. Replacement should not be neglected, since there are cases of unexpected circuit breaks. At the same time, there were no symptoms in the engine operation that warned the owner about the critical condition of the part.

Engine tuning

Owners of cars with engines with a power of less than 140 hp. With. can resort to simple chip tuning, which will “free up” about 10-12 hp. With. Physical intervention will be minimal:

  • Removing the first oxygen sensor.
  • Installing a fake instead of a second CO sensor.
  • Installing new firmware on the ECU (Adact-2).

Engines with cast iron liners inside an aluminum block can be improved with “heavy” tuning:

  1. Grinding of cylinder head channels and intake tract.
  2. Installation of other camshafts with increased cam lift and larger phases.
  3. Boring of the exhaust manifold and increasing its cross-section to 53 mm.
  4. Boring the block and installing larger diameter sleeves.
  5. ECU flashing.

Moreover, it is even possible to install a supercharger (turbine) and thereby add power to the engine. To do this, the intake and exhaust tracts are modified, the turbine itself is installed, and the ECU firmware is changed. Turbocharging will increase power to 220-250 hp. s., however, the resource will drop significantly.
