Seventh generation Volkswagen jetta: what will please the new sedan

Two gasoline engines have been prepared for Russia: a turbocharged 1.4 liter with a capacity of 150 hp. With. and atmospheric 1.6 l per 110 l. With. The second of this pair, by the way, will be assembled at a plant in Kaluga and sent to Mexico, and from there the finished cars will sail to us. This is some interesting logistics that will certainly raise prices. I wonder what kind of dynamics it will have, because the previous generation had a 105 hp engine. s., frankly speaking, was leisurely even with the “mechanics”. Another important news: there will be no DSG. Now, instead of a robot, the Jetta has a six-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission. We won’t say that it is more reliable, but for our customers the DSG gearbox has long turned into a red rag. The classic six-speed automatic transmission looks more attractive – fact. A five-speed manual transmission is also available for the 1.6-liter engine (the 1.4-liter engine has no alternative automatic transmission).

Technical stuffing

The wheelbase of the new Volkswagen Jetta 2021 has increased by 35 mm and reached 2686 mm.

Length – 4702 mm, width – 1799 mm, and height – 1459 mm. Interestingly, the rear overhang has lengthened by 18 mm, and the front overhang has become shorter by 10 mm.

Under the hood, the Jetta has a four-cylinder turbocharged engine generating 150 horsepower. It is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission.

A robotic gearbox with a powerful 2.0 TSI engine producing 174 hp will be presented only in 2021. Obviously, this version will first hit the American market. There is no need to wait for other power units.

New Volkswagen Lavida Plus sedan: an alternative Jetta

In China, Volkswagen has long had a policy of duplicating key models, producing cool cars under different names at different factories. For example, the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture produces the Sagitar sedans, a tuned version of our sixth-generation Jetta. And at the Volkswagen site in Shanghai they form a family called Lavida: sedans and hatchbacks are created on the platform of the “fourth” Golf, but have modern technologies and appearance. A new Jetta has already appeared on the American market, which means it’s time to change Chinese cars.

FAW-Volkswagen production launch ceremony

FAW-Volkswagen has already started production of the new generation Sagitar sedan: this car has not yet been officially declassified, but it will have minimal differences from the Jetta. For the Shanghai Volkswagen joint venture, which formally debuted first, they prepared a slightly different car: the Volkswagen Lavida Plus sedan.

At first glance: the same Jetta, but if you take a closer look at the details, you will understand that the body panels are completely different. There is less embossing on the hood, the shape of the radiator grille and headlights is different, the door handles are located not on the edge of the threshold, but below it, the windows in the rear pillars have a different contour, the arrangement of sections in the rear lights is all different.

The same floor difference is in the living room. The front fascia has a different shape, the center console doesn’t face the driver as prominently as on the Jetta, and the gauges can only be analog: the virtual cluster isn’t even included in the options list.

But technically, Lavida Plus and Jetta are the same thing. It is based on a version of the MQB platform with semi-independent rear suspension and a wheelbase of 2688 mm. The overall length differs only for different tails: 4670 mm for the Lavida versus 4702 mm for the Jetta. In the rear row, the space and ventilation flaps between the backs of the front seats are identical.

But while the American sedan is only equipped with a 1.4 TSI turbo quattro (150 hp), the Lavida Plus will also offer an even quieter engine: a naturally aspirated 1.5 MPI with 116 hp. Transmissions: Six-speed manual automatic combined with a pre-selected seven-speed DSG for turbocharged versions and seven-speed gearbox.

Options include dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, a rearview camera, parking, LED headlights, push-button start, adaptive cruise control and automatic braking. Even if the initial configurations are proletarian.

Production of the new sedans at Volkswagen’s joint venture in Shanghai will begin soon, and Chinese dealers will receive the cars by the end of spring. At the same time, the old Lavida will remain in service and will be placed half a step lower, so the Plus prefix was needed for the new sedan. One can only dream of such abundance – the new Jetta will appear in Russia only at the beginning of next year and without a “support group”.
