What’s under the hood?
Camry still has a wide choice of three naturally aspirated engines, but the initial 2.0 and 2.5 engines are now the same as crossover RAV4.
And the youngest 150‑horsepower Camry I also changed the automatic to a CVT. This duo drives very decently, even with small pressures on the floor-mounted accelerator. I pressed down as much as I could and went on without any hesitation or cotton wool. And the variator always pretends to go through 10 real gears.
And the first of them is real! When starting and at low speeds, the pulleys “close” with the help of a gear, disabling the belt. There is hope that the CVT will last longer than the average, although this Aisin design appeared only in 2018 and there is still little public experience with it.
Camry 2.0 is not a vegetable at all. According to the stated acceleration time, it even overtakes the pre-reform Camry 2.5: up to 100 km/h in 9.5 s versus 9.9 s.
Motor 2.5 (three quarters of sales!) now has 200 horsepower and eight-speed hydromechanics. I didn’t feel any special changes: this sedan was already peppy, but it didn’t turn into a sports car. Two “extra” gears should reduce fuel consumption – in the combined cycle, 6.8 l/100 km is stated, one and a half liters less than before! And this is still AI-92 gasoline (like the 2.0 engine).
Loved by many and unique for the segment top-end 3.5-liter V6 engine – it’s still the same confident, soft acceleration from any speed, although devoid of drama or strain. Don’t expect a special baritone from the 249-horsepower sedan either: the voice is only slightly sweeter than that of less powerful versions – especially when compared with the two-liter Camry, in which the engine is forced to constantly spin at speeds above 2000-3000.
ABOUT IRON
The basic two-liter naturally aspirated model is M20A-FKS. Like its predecessor 6AR-FSE, fuel is injected combined – into the cylinders and into the intake manifold. At the same 150 hp. maximum torque increased from 192 to 206 Nm. Compression ratio – 13.0. The two-liter engine, like everything else, is now supplied from Japan – but was made in China.
It is paired with the K120 variator, known since 2018 and manufactured by Aisin. For the sake of reliability, the power range of the variable speed unit was chosen to be small – 5.00 (competitors have more than seven). When starting off and at speeds up to 20–25 km/h, a separate “first gear” is engaged, in which the gear mechanically connects the drive and driven pulleys. The reverse gear is arranged similarly.

CVT K120
The 2.5 engine is also naturally aspirated, four-cylinder, and is now also equipped with combined injection. The A25A-FKS unit replaced former 2AR-FE. Power is now 200 hp, not 181, and torque is 243 Nm versus the previous 231 Nm. The compression ratio was raised from 10.4 to 13.0. Like the 2.0 engine, the front support is made hydraulic to reduce vibrations.
The automatic transmission is now eight-speed, the same as on the top version 3.5 V6 (249 hp), but with its own gear ratios. This Aisin gearbox is well known and is installed on many cars from Volvo and BMW to Peugeot.
