Description of suspension modes
Air suspension calibration is excluded if an open door impulse is sent to the control unit. The normal height of a vehicle when driving on asphalt is designated ON-Road. The remaining modes should be studied in more detail.
Off-road (OFF-Road)
When driving off-road, increased ground clearance is provided. The mode is active if the vehicle speed is less than 40 km/h. The car rises by 55 mm compared to the normal mode on the road, which provides an increase in ground clearance, exit angles, exit angles and ridge elevation
If the speed exceeds 50 km/h, the Discovery 3 air suspension pump lowers the vehicle to a level corresponding to the travel mode. When driving 40-45 km/h, a notification appears on the control monitor notifying the driver to reduce speed, otherwise the ground clearance will be reduced automatically.
Landing (Access)
The height of the car body becomes lower by 50 mm, which simplifies loading and unloading. This mode can be set while driving. When the speed is reduced, the ground clearance will be reduced by half; the full reduction occurs at 8 km/h. If the desired parameter is not achieved within a given period, the Discovery 3 air suspension returns to its original height.
Access mode can be set at any vehicle speed. The reaction of the unit depends on the intensity of the machine’s movement. If it is above 20 km/h, the system waits for 1 minute to descend. The indicator lights will flicker while the unit is in standby mode. At a travel speed of less than 20 km/h, the system will partially lower the suspension, maintaining it for 1 minute.
If the specified mode is reached, the sensor will go out, The driver will have 40 seconds to change the height if the car door has not been opened. Automatic adjustment of ground clearance when driving off-road will take place if the speed exceeds 10 km/h. Under other conditions, the ride height will be adjusted to suit the driving conditions on the road.
CRAWL (travel at reduced speed at landing altitude)
This mode is convenient when entering parking lots with a low roof and performing other similar maneuvers. The height of the vehicle corresponds to the landing parameter, which is selected at a speed not exceeding 35 km/h. CRAWL for the air suspension of Land Rover Discovery 3 can be activated at normal or reduced ground clearance. The display shows messages about changes in body height and recommendations for complying with the speed limit.
To manually turn on the mode, you need to move the switch up for 1 second. In this case, the driving indicator with reduced ground clearance will go out.
TRANSPORTATION (transportation)
This is an additional mode that can only be installed using diagnostic equipment certified by Land Rover. This option makes it possible to adjust the height of the vehicle when stationary. This solution simplifies the attachment of the tow hitch. The system is activated from the remote control when the ignition is turned off.

System messages and their meanings
If the control unit has detected a malfunction of the air suspension due to loss of traction (or landing on the bottom), the volume of air supplied to the elastic elements of the system will be redistributed. The operation of the advanced mode is indicated by flashing indicators and a notification on the central instrument panel monitor.
When notified that adjusting the body height and clearance is interfering with the movement of the car, the control unit will suspend the change in ground clearance until the situation stabilizes.
If the control unit detects other malfunctions, the functionality of the unit will be limited, depending on the type of malfunction. The driver is informed about shortcomings by the corresponding sensor and notification on the screen.
Causes of the problem
Discovery 3 suspension errors can occur for various reasons. Let’s look at the most common ones:
- Malfunction of suspension sensors. They may be damaged, corroded, or malfunction due to broken wires or poor connections.
- Worn or damaged shock absorbers. During vehicle operation, shock absorbers may fail, which will lead to improper operation of the suspension.
- Incorrect operation of the computer suspension control system. A software error or failure of electronic components can cause the suspension to not function properly and cause an error to appear.
- Damage or wear of suspension elements. Various suspension parts such as arms, joints and mounts can become worn or damaged, causing the suspension to not function properly.
Discovery 3 suspension error may occur due to one or more reasons. To fix the problem, it is recommended that you contact a qualified technician who will diagnose and make the necessary repairs.
Suspension fault error, the front of the Land Rover Range Rover has lifted
The front of the car has risen to its maximum, the rear is at normal height. The suspension does not rise or fall. It shows the “suspension fault” error, and when driving, it indicates along with this error not to drive more than 50 km/h. Before this, sometimes the same error was displayed, but it did not rise spontaneously. Before I got up after visiting the craftsmen, who warned that such an opportunity would happen and suggested changing the air suspension valve block (they said it costs 11 thousand). By the way, the air suspension indicator on the instrument panel lights up for some time after turning on the ignition in the car. When you try to lower the suspension down, the indication goes out.

Fault Detection
The air suspension control unit performs fault diagnosis and plausibility checks. Only those faults are detected that the control unit can detect by direct measurements:
- Sensor wiring faults
- Valve wiring faults
- Malfunctions of the power supply circuits of sensors and actuators
- Tire faults
- Control unit hardware malfunctions
Validity checks and signal behavior checks:
- Incorrect average height change. Height change too slow.
- Height change too slow
- Gallery pressure Does not increase quickly enough when the receiver is requested to fill Increases when the system is inactive Too low when the height is requested Increases too quickly when the receiver is filled Does not decrease when the gallery is purged Pressure changes too much when the system is inactive.
- Doesn’t increase fast enough when asked to fill the receiver
- Increases when the system is inactive
- Too low when asking for height increase
- Increases too quickly when filling the receiver
- Does not decrease when the gallery is purged
- Pressure changes too much when the system is inactive
- Compressor temperature Sensor voltage too low – head and brush sensors (short to battery) Takes too long to read after sufficient compressor operation – head and brush sensors Does not increase when compressor is on – head sensor only
- Sensor voltage too low – head and brush sensors (short circuit to battery)
- It takes too long to read the data after the compressor has worked sufficiently – head and brush sensors
- Does not increase when the compressor is on – head sensor only
- Operation of sensors “Floating” signal Constant rotation when moving
- “Floating” signal
- Constant rotation when moving
When a fault is detected, the air suspension control unit tries to maintain ride comfort and functionality as much as possible.
The functionality of the system is determined by the severity of the fault.
Air suspension diagnostic errors
The table shows the main errors in the dynamic suspension of the Discovery 3, identified through diagnostics.
Fault Alerts
In case of minor breakdowns, the warning lamp will light up yellow, reminding you that the air suspension must be repaired as soon as possible. If a serious breakdown is detected at speeds above 50 km/h, the indicator will light red. In this case, the vehicle should be operated with extreme caution. When the speed decreases, the audible warning turns off and the sensor lights up yellow.
If you are driving at a low altitude off-road, the control unit notifies you of a speed close to the threshold value (the sound signal turns on and the sensor starts blinking rapidly).
Translation of Discovery suspension system messages
Message on display | Decoding | What to do |
SUSPENSION FAULT NORMAL HEIGHT ONLY | “Suspension malfunction; just normal height.”
Amber pendant icon, single beep. |
The air suspension control system has detected a system malfunction. Only normal height is available. Perform diagnostics using T4. |
SUSPENSION FAULT MAX SPEED 50KPH (30MPH) | Suspension malfunction; top speed 50 km/h (30 mph)
Amber pendant badge. Double beep. |
If the speed is too high, two beeps are repeated every 30 seconds. The air suspension control module has detected a fault in the system and is unable to properly control the height. Perform diagnostics using T4. |
SLOW DOWN OR VEHICLE WILL RAISE | Reduce speed or the car will rise. Two beeps. Vehicle speed is 30 km/h. | If the vehicle speed increases to 40 km/h, the vehicle height will automatically rise from the Rocky Ground mode height to the normal height. Keep the vehicle speed below 40 km/h. |
SLOW DOWN OR VEHICLE WILL LOWER | Reduce speed or the vehicle will lower. Single beep | Vehicle speed is 40-45 km/h. The car automatically lowers to normal height if the speed increases to 50 km/h. Keep the vehicle speed below 50 km/h. |
SUSPENSION WILL LIFT WHEN SYSTEM COOLED | The suspension will rise when the system cools. The error is not displayed, there is no sound signal. | The compressor or air supply motor is cooling down. Lifting will resume when cooling to the specified threshold occurs. |
VEHICLE LIFTING SLOWLY | The car rises slowly | The car rises using only the pressure from the compressor because the reservoir is empty. The message is only displayed if the rise time is more than 12 seconds. |
EXTENDED MODE | Advanced mode. Single beep. | The car body hits obstacles and the suspension. The suspension will rise to the height of the extended mode. |
RESET HEIGHT IF CLEAR OF OBSTACLE | Re-adjust the altitude if there is no interference | Reminder: The car is still in advanced mode. When this mode is no longer required, press the air suspension control switch to return to off-road driving height. |
SUSPENSION LOCKED AT ACCESS HEIGHT | Suspension locked at access height | The suspension “Hold” switch was pressed while the machine was at access height. The vehicle enters Rocky Ground mode until the switch is pressed again or the vehicle speed exceeds a threshold. |
CLOSE DOORS TO CHANGE HEIGHT | Close the doors to change the height. Single beep. | The door is open when a height change request is made. We need to close the doors. The height will change if the doors are closed within 90 seconds of the request. After 90 seconds, a repeat request to change the height is required. |
SPEED TOO HIGH TO CHANGE HEIGHT | The speed is too high to change the ride height. Single beep. | High speed for altitude changes. Reduce speed within the allowable range to change ride heights. |
